How to make a lower third in Premiere Pro.

A lower third is the text at the bottom of the screen showing the speaker's name and title. It is the most repeated graphic in interviews, podcasts and corporate videos. Build it well once and you can reuse it in every video.

1. From scratch: text and shape layers

  1. Type the nameWith the Type tool (T), click in the Program Monitor and type the name. Add a second text layer in the same graphic for the title.
  2. Put a bar behind itDraw a rectangle behind the text with the Rectangle tool and move it below the text in the layer order. Set its color and opacity.
  3. AlignSelect the layers and left-align them with the align buttons. Keep them inside the safe area, in the lower third of the screen.
  4. Add an entranceKeyframe Opacity and Position at the start of the graphic clip so the bar rises in from below.

To reuse your lower third, copy the graphic clip into another video or export it as a Motion Graphics template.

2. With a ready-made template: Sylba

Sylba's Graphics section has ready-made lower third and credit templates; some of them are free. Pick a template and send it to the timeline, then type the name and title in Premiere's Properties panel. Font and colors are changed there too.

Which way should you choose?

If you are designing one lower third specific to your brand, building it from scratch makes sense. If you need a clean-looking bar quickly, or want to try different looks, a ready-made template shortens the job.

For a good lower third

Use at most two lines: name and title. Show it when the person first appears, hold it for at least three seconds, then remove it. Put the text on the bar rather than on a bright part of the picture so it reads on any background.
