How to animate text in Premiere Pro.

A moving title makes the same words far more noticeable. Text animation in Premiere Pro is built on keyframes: you give a property two different values at two different moments, and Premiere fills in the motion between them.

1. Text that slides and fades in

  1. Create the textPick the Type tool (T), click in the Program Monitor and type.
  2. Record the end stateMove the playhead to the moment the text should settle. In Effect Controls press the stopwatches for Position and Opacity.
  3. Set the start stateGo to the start of the text clip; move Position down a little and set Opacity to 0. Between the two moments the text slides up and fades in.
  4. Ease itSelect the keyframes and right-click: Temporal Interpolation › Ease Out. The move slows down as it settles.

2. A left-to-right reveal: Crop

Add the Crop effect to the text from the Effects panel. Keyframe Right at 100 at the start of the clip and 0 half a second later; the text opens from left to right. Raising Edge Feather a little softens the edge.

3. Ready-made text animations: with Sylba

Sylba's Graphics section has text animation templates that come in letter by letter or word by word, with emphasis, neon and handwriting looks. Pick a template and send it to the timeline; change the text, font and color in Premiere.

If you want to animate captions for speech, the Captions section brings each word on screen as it is spoken; it has 61 ready-made styles and is free.

For a good text animation

Keep the entrance short: half a second is enough for most titles. Leave the text on screen long enough to read; time it by reading it aloud. Stay with one or two kinds of animation in a video; if every title moves differently, attention shifts from the words to the motion.
